1974 Super 150
This 1974 US-spec Vespa Super 150 was purchased from a young man in Northern New Jersey for the price of $0.00. He was the third owner of this Super and took pretty good care of the scooter. The engine was refreshed by Scooters Originali in 2012, where they replaced the seals and bearings, rebuilt the clutch and top end, kickstart, cables, and tires. He also found an original saddle and buddy seat.
With a little searching online, I was able to track down the second owners; a young couple from the West Coast. They were kind enough to fill me in on the history of the Super…
It’s great to see the bike! I’ll try to fill in as many details as I can: you’re the 4th owner of the bike (my wife and I were the second owners). We purchased the bike (in the mid 2000s) on consignment from a shop in SE Portland Oregon. The taillights and seat had been replaced before we bought it, presumably by this same shop. I believe the original owner had stored the bike in his garage in Salem, OR for many years and it went through some repairs to get it up and running before we purchased it. I can’t remember the name of this shop that likely did the work (I couldn’t find it online – it might not exist anymore) but if it comes to mind I’ll let you know. My wife and I owned the bike for several years and my wife used it to commute to and from work in the suburbs of Portland. When we moved to <redacted> in 2010 the bike came with us but it quickly became apparent that we had neither the time nor space to house and maintain the bike. So we sold it, in 2011, to this fellow from New Jersey who owned several other Vespas at the time.
One document you might be interested in (and this is how I know we were the second owners): when we purchased the bike, it came with the original registration when it was first registered in 1974! When we registered the bike, we had to turn in the original paperwork but I took a picture of it before doing so. I’ll see if I can dig it up that picture, it’s an interesting document to have with the bike. Also of interest, I believe the original owner of the bike is listed on that document: if you were able to track him or her down, they would likely be able to fill you in on more details.
So cool! The Internet is amazing. This explained why the Super had a Euro-style taillight and it was awesome to read about the history.
